When Pharaoh ordered all Hebrew baby boys to be killed, Moses’ mother hid him for three months. When she could hide him no longer, she took a papyrus basket, coated it with tar and pitch, placed the baby in it, and hid it among the reeds along the Nile River.
While Moses was tending sheep near Mount Horeb, the angel of the Lord appeared to him in flames of fire from within a bush. Moses saw that though the bush was on fire, it did not burn up, and God called out to him from inside the bush.
When Pharaoh refused to let the Israelites go, God commanded Moses and Aaron to strike the water of the Nile River with a staff. The water was miraculously turned into blood, killing the fish and making the water completely undrinkable for Egyptians.
As the Israelites traveled through the desert and complained of hunger, God rained down bread from heaven. Every morning after the dew evaporated, a thin, flake-like substance remained on the ground, which the Israelites called “Manna,” meaning “What is it?”
God descended upon the top of Mount Sinai in fire and smoke. He called Moses up to the mountain top and gave him the Ten Commandments, which formed the covenant and moral laws for the newly freed nation of Israel.
When the people saw that Moses was taking a long time on Mount Sinai, they grew impatient and demanded Aaron make them gods. Aaron collected their gold earrings, melted them down, and shaped them into a golden calf for worship.
When venomous snakes bit the Israelites due to their constant complaining, God told Moses to make a fiery serpent and set it on a pole. Anyone who was bitten by a snake could look at the bronze serpent and live, symbolizing future faith.
Moses sent twelve leaders, representing each of the twelve tribes of Israel, to explore the land of Canaan (the Promised Land) for forty days to see if the land was good and what kind of people lived there.
While ten of the spies brought back a fearful report that terrified the Israelites, Joshua and Caleb tore their clothes in grief and urged the people to trust God, declaring that the land was excellent and God would lead them into victory.
Because the Israelites lacked faith and rebelled against God after hearing the spies’ report, God declared that the entire generation would wander in the wilderness for forty years—one year for each of the forty days the spies explored the land.
