Paul vividly contrasts the ultimate results of sin and salvation by stating, “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” This highlights the unearned grace given to believers.
In describing the spiritual armor required for believers to stand firm, Paul identifies the Sword of the Spirit as the Word of God. It is the only offensive weapon mentioned in the entire armor set.
The Fruit of the Spirit includes love, joy, peace, forbearance (patience), kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Knowledge is considered a spiritual gift, but not explicitly listed here as a fruit.
The Epistle to the Philippians is one of Paul’s “Prison Epistles.” Despite being locked in chains, the entire letter is filled with themes of immense joy, contentment, and relying entirely on Christ’s strength.
Paul emphasizes that spiritual gifts, intense faith, and deep theological knowledge are completely worthless and essentially annoying noise if they are not rooted in genuine, selfless love.
Paul comforts the believers regarding the Second Coming by explaining that the Lord will come down from heaven with a loud command, the voice of the archangel, and with the trumpet call of God.
In his shortest letter, Paul writes to Philemon about Onesimus, a slave who had run away but became a Christian under Paul’s ministry. Paul asks Philemon to accept him back, not as a slave, but as a beloved brother in Christ.
Because of the exceptionally great revelations Paul received, he was given a “thorn in his flesh, a messenger of Satan,” to torment him and keep him humble. When he asked God to remove it, God replied, “My grace is sufficient for you.”
After urging the church to clothe themselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience, Paul declares that love is the supreme virtue that holds everything else perfectly together.
Knowing his execution was imminent, Paul wrote these final words of victory and perseverance to his young protégé Timothy, confidently awaiting the crown of righteousness from the Lord.
How did you do? The Epistles of Paul contain some of the most complex theological arguments in the Bible, so missing a few questions is completely normal.
